Church-Wide Fall Study
Where’s Your Chair? Hearing the Word. Doing the Word.
September 21 - October 26, 2014
An Introduction by Pastor Kenita Harris
It was the same every day; Mom would get up at 5 AM. The door was closed and you could hear the clicking of the switch on the lamp. The light was on! The light from the lamp would shine into the dark hallway. I stood at the door of that room and wondered: “What is Mom doing in there?” And there she was reading and studying God’s Word. I knew that Mom was not to be disturbed because it was that sacred time she spent listening to God through the Word. I have grown from that curious little girl standing at that door to a woman of faith. I find myself entering a dark room, hearing the clicking of the switch on the lamp. The light comes on! And I sit and open The GOOD BOOK that I too might hear God through the Word.
The American Bible Society reports that in this past week:
• 19% of those who attend church engaged God through His Word four or more times.
• 40% did once or twice.
• 41% never did.
If Christian churches are full, but most people simply are not making time to find their “chair,” when are we creating space in our life to hear a Word from the LORD? God is calling for us to be “hearers and doers of the Word” (James 1:22).
In this church-wide study we want to help everyone find their “chair,” a place to hear God through the Word. To that end we are asking each of you to make the following commitments:
• Pray for this church-wide study and its impact in our lives.
• Commit to attend the Sunday services.
• Commit to joining a group or forming a group to connect with others through God’s Word.
• Invite a friend who is not engaged with God or His Word.
