Like a Tree

Week 65

Learning by heart (tip):  Let’s review the main reasons why we are to learn Scripture by heart:

  • Like Timothy, we will grow in Christ-like wisdom and character (2 Timothy 3:14-17).
  • Like David, we will sin less and less (Psalm 119:9-11).
  • Like Mary, we will learn to worship and praise God at all times (Luke 1:46-55).
  • Like Jesus, we will love God the Father more than anything or anyone else (Matthew 4:4).

Finding the gospel (hint):  Can you see how Zechariah 14:9 anticipates the New Testament’s teaching on Jesus Christ?

  • Read Matthew 2:1-6 and Revelation 19:11-16 and then describe how these two texts describe the kingship of Jesus from two different perspectives.
  • In Matthew 21:1-5 we are told that Jesus comes to his people as a king.  Why did many people struggle with this?  In this scene, do you think you would have joined with Jesus’ supporters or detractors?

Living witnesses (today):  Jesus is our prophet, priest, and king.  What does it mean to live under Jesus’ kingly authority? Do you struggle with giving your whole self to Jesus?  Take some time today to ask Jesus to show you what area of your life is not yet in submission to His rule.  What are you holding back from him?  Once you identify it, bow before Jesus Christ and offer that part of your life that you are keeping to yourself.

Praying scripture (now):  “Lord Jesus, the Christmas hymn reminds me that you ‘were born a child and yet a king.’  Come and reign in me forever.  I want you to have complete sway over my heart.  I struggle with this, but I want to yield more and more of my life, my very self, to you.  Soon you will be king over all the earth.  Even now your kingdom is here and growing.  Give me the grace to follow your leadership.  In your name I pray, amen.”
